Dr. Steve B. Menke

Dr. Steve B. Menke received his D.V.M. in 1976 from Iowa State University. Upon graduation, Dr. Menke went into private practice in Richland,Iowa.  As this practice continued to grow, the caseload in all species provided him with valuable clinical experience. In 1978, Dr. Menke was instrumental in the Veterinary Economics Hospital of the Month award that his practice received. In 1985, Dr. Menke began the development of Ottumwa Veterinary

Clinic. His goal has been to establish a facility and organize a highly trained staff to meet the total veterinary needs of the community.

In 1995 Dr. Menke completed a two year course of study in Swine Health Management when he was named co-valedictorian of the Executive Veterinary Program at the University of Illinois, Urbana - Champaign.

In October 2001, Dr. Menke was the recipient of the William P. Switzer Award in Veterinary Medicine. This award presented by Iowa State University recognizes outstanding contributions to society and veterinary medicine.

Steve’s wife Nancy is associated with Coldwell Banker Prestige Midwest Realtors. Steve and Nancy are the parents of Michael Ackely, the golf professional at Fox Ridge Golf Club in Dike, Iowa and Christopher Steven, the developer of Hawk Sign in San Diego.


Dr. Todd E. Williams

Dr Todd E. Williams Received his D.V.M. in 2002 from Iowa State University. Todd also received a minor in Entrepreneurial Studies in 2002 and a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from Iowa State University in 1998. He is a 2009 graduate of the University of Illinois Executive Veterinary Program in Swine Health Management.

To many of you, Todd may be a familiar face. Todd has been a member of the staff of Ottumwa Veterinary Clinic since he began as an animal caretaker in 1989. Since that time, he has continued working as a member of the staff throughout his high school years and many of his college breaks.

Todd has interest in canine and feline medicine and surgery as well as swine production medicine. He has an excellent educational background to support these interests. Todd received numerous awards while in vet school including the John and Mary Pappajohn Entrepreneur Scholarship, Dr. Harvey Price and Corinne Price Scholarship for the Study of Veterinary Medicine, and the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association Foundation Scholarship.

Todd and his wife Tracy (Maxwell) are both graduates of Ottumwa High School and are pleased that they have the opportunity to call Ottumwa home again. Todd and Tracy are the parents of Maxwell Ewing and Lane Robert.



Dr. Lori (Sample) Hickie

Dr. Lori I (Sample) Hickie, received her D.V.M. in 2004 from Iowa State University.  Upon graduation, Dr. Hickie worked at a high volume small animal hospital in Naperville, Illinois, which provided her with valuable experience in small animal medicine, surgery, and dentistry.

Dr. Hickie practices compassionate, quality medicine focusing on the bond which animals and humans share.  She believes that every pet should receive the best care.  Lori enjoys educating clients to ensure that their pets live the longest and fullest life possible.

    Lori is a native of Ottumwa and a graduate of Ottumwa High School and Indian Hills Community College.  She and her husband,Chris, share their home with three cats;  Brandi, Titus and Tippy.


    Dr. Leah I. Thies

    Dr. Leah I. Thies received her D.V.M. in 2008 from Iowa State University and completed her pre-veterinary studies in ISU’s Department of Animal Science.  During school she worked at veterinary clinics in Ames and in Boone.  She joined the team at Ottumwa Veterinary Clinic shortly after graduation and has been serving the community since.

    After graduation Leah received further advanced training in small animal fracture repair.  While she enjoys all aspects of dog and cat preventative care, medicine, and surgery, she especially enjoys small animal orthopedic and emergency care.

    Leah is a native of Des Moines and her husband Eric is a native of Newton, Iowa.  Leah and Eric are both graduates of Dowling Catholic High School.  They share their small farm with their dogs Dieter and Fenris, their cat Ewok, and several livestock.

    Dr. Emily J. McDowell

    Dr. McDowell received her D.V.M. in 2011 from Iowa State University. Emily completed her pre-veterinary studies at Iowa State University in 2007 where she received bachelor’s degrees in Animal Science and Dairy Science. 

    Dr. McDowell has a strong interest in food animal medicine and production with a special interest in swine.  Emily strives to promote the swine industry, optimize productivity and sustainability, and shape the safety, quality, and consistency of our food supply.  Emily is also looking forward to practicing small animal medicine and surgery at Ottumwa Veterinary Clinic.  Emily strives to work together with owners to encourage the human-animal relationship and provide compassionate, quality care and medicine to each patient.    Dr. McDowell is very excited to join the staff of Ottumwa Veterinary Clinic as it fits her goals and interests.

    Emily grew up on a grain and livestock farm near Primghar in northwest Iowa. Emily is very eager to join and serve in the community of Ottumwa.   Emily’s knowledge and personality will be a great addition to Ottumwa Veterinary Clinic
